The Dreamer (17) continues JoCa's ongoing Dreamer series, in which the human figure is built up and broken down to picture identity as unstable and provisional. The face surfaces and dissolves at once — closer to a memory than a likeness — extending the artist's central concern with the self as continually under construction.
Worked in oil on canvas, the painting moves between soft, dissolved passages and firmer, resolved marks, holding atmosphere and structure in a single image. A restrained palette concentrates attention on the threshold between presence and disappearance, and the intimate scale rewards close, sustained looking.
